Lip Filler

What Is Lip Filler?

Lip Filler (or Lip Augmentation) is a cosmetic procedure that involves adding volume to the lips with injectable Hyaluronic Acid filler. Lip Filler can be used to increase the size, change the shape, and smooth wrinkling in the lips.

Results can range from natural to dramatic, depending on the look you want to achieve. Our advanced aesthetic injectors will customize your Lip Filler experience to best meet your needs.

Which Filler Is Right For You?

Different Lip Filler results require specific types of filler, which is why we carry a variety of Lip Filler products to meet each patients unique needs.

If you have received Lip Filler from a previous injector that you are unhappy with, it can be dissolved before proceeding with a Lip Filler treatment.

PATIENT EDUCATION

Most dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring complex sugar in your body that helps provide volume, structure, elasticity and moisture to your skin. HA is lost with age. Fillers are meant to replace volume to facial structures that have lost volume secondary to age and/or lifestyle. Adding volume to facial structures gives a more youthful-look to the face. Dermal fillers can be used in the tear troughs, nose, cheeks, lips, chin and jawline. Dermal fillers can also be used in the hands for hand restoration.

How does it work? HA filler is a smooth injectable gel. It is placed below the skin and often deep above the bone to fill space of volume loss. Doing this improves hollowing, folds and loose skin. Your body makes HA and is able to sustain it as well as break it down. HA filler is not permanent. Once the HA filler is placed it then fills with water from your body leaving a volume restored and natural look. Receiving HA filler also improves the moisture to your skin as HA holds 1,000 times its weight in water. Even better, the addition of new HA in your body encourages your body to increase collagen and elastin production which also improves overall skin integrity and quality.

  • Avoid Advil, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Aspirin, Motrin, Vitamin E, Fish Oil, St. John’s Wort, Garlic and other Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory products 5-7 days prior to treatment. Doing this will help decrease your chance of bruising.
Do not stop taking any medications that have been prescribed to you without first discussing it with your prescribing provider.
  • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages 48-72 hours before treatment to reduce risk of bruising.
  • Another way to reduce the chance of bruising is to start taking an antihistamine (Claritin, Zyrtec, or Loratadine) for 3 days prior, Bromaline and Arnica tablets 7-10 days before treatment.
  • Tylenol will not increase the chance of bruising and is preferred for the week prior to treatment. To help with possible discomfort, you may take Tylenol one hour prior to your scheduled appointment. Do not take more than 3000mg of Tylenol in a 24 hour period.

Post Treatment

  • To reduce the risk of bruising, continue taking over the counter Arnica tablets. Take as directed on the bottle for 3-5 days or as long as bruising is present. You might have some redness and swelling that should resolve within several days.
  • Bruising may occur, and may last up to 14 days. Cold compresses/ice may be used immediately after treatment to reduce swelling and for comfort.
  • The use of Antihistamines will assist in reducing swelling. If you received dermal filler to your tear trough and/or lips continue take an antihistamine (Claritin, Zyrtec, or Loratadine) for 3 days post treatment to help reduce post-treatment swelling.
  • Under-eyes can swell more than other areas. This swelling and bruising may last several days to weeks.
  • Do not manipulate, push, or rub injection sites within the first 72 hours. Specifically for lip injections, begin gentle massage to lips on day 3 if lumps or bumps can be felt.
  • Give these 4-6 weeks to fully heal as they may be a result of bruising or induration vs product.
  • Exercise should be avoided within the first 24-72 hours as it may increase swelling and bruising.
  • Call our office immediately if you notice blanching (whitening of the skin), experience intense pain or have any other concerns.
