Sculptra

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra Aesthetic is an FDA-approved injectable made of biocompatible, biodegradable, synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid.  Sculptra injections helps gradually replace lost collagen—the most common protein in the body that is used to form a framework to support cell and tissue—for results that can last more than two years.

Sculptra Aesthetic addresses an underlying cause of aging, not just the symptoms.

Who Is Sculptra Right For?

Sculptra Aesthetic does more than simply “fill” face. In fact, it is important to understand that Sculptra is simply a collagen stimulator, not a Hyaluronic Acid Filler. Results develop gradually over the course of 2-3 months, look completely natural, and last much longer than most other injectables.

The most popular area to treat with Sculptra is the temples and Sculptra BBL. Other areas that can be treated are the neck, chest, and knees

PATIENT EDUCATION

Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). PLLA is one of the most well-researched, safe, and most common polymer used for biodegradable medical products that are available. Sculptra is used as an injectable solution that stimulates the production of collagen. Collagen stimulators are used to diminish facial wrinkles by helping to restore the deep, underlying structure of the skin. They also restore volume to areas of the face that are experiencing volume loss secondary to aging. Results appear gradually over the treatment regime (typically two treatments over the course of 6-12 weeks) and can last up to two years.

How does it work? Once Sculptra is injected the microparticles initiate neocollagenesis (new collagen production) as a result of a normal foreign-body reaction to the presence of the microparticles. The build- up of collagen over time creates volume at the site of injection, while the Sculptra microparticles are metabolized to carbon dioxide and water and expelled through the respiratory system. It is the absorption of the Sculptra microparticles that help stimulate collagen production. Rebuilt collagen strands begin gradually helping to create facial volume and a more youthful appearance. They also improve the look of wrinkles and folds by strengthening the inner structure of the skin. Sculptra works from the inside out. Right after your treatment you will notice an increase in volume. This volume will be absorbed. The treatment area will appear to return to what it looked like before treatment. This is normal. As stated before, your body will gradually build collagen in the treatment areas and full results may be seen as early as 6 weeks. With max potential building over the next 6 months.

SCULPTRA PRE/POST CARE INSTRUCTIONS

PRIOR TO TREATMENT

  • Please schedule your appointment to allow for a couple days or more of potential swelling, tenderness, and bruising.
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding cannot be treated.
  • Patients actively undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment cannot be treated. Patients must be in remission for 6 months to be treated.
  • If you have recently used the medication Accutane, it is recommended to postpone treatment until at least 12 months after stopping the medication.
  • Please inform your provider of any and all previous treatments, procedures or surgery medical conditions, medications you are taking, skin disorders, allergies, history of anaphylaxis, and any other medical problems.
  • If you have an active cold sore/fever blister, canker sore or shingles you will need to postpone treatment.
  • If you are prone to developing cold sores/fever blisters or shingles, please contact us 1 week before treatment for recommendations.
  • Avoid Advil, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Aspirin, Motrin, Vitamin E, Fish Oil, St. John’s Wort, Garlic and other Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory products 5-7 days prior to treatment. Doing this will help decrease your chance of bruising. Do not stop taking any medications that have been prescribed to you without first discussing it with your prescribing provider.
  • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages 48-72 hours before treatment to reduce risk of bruising.
  • Another way to reduce the chance of bruising is to start taking Bromaline 7-10 days before treatment. Take as directed on the bottle. Easily found at any pharmacy as an over the counter product.
  • Tylenol will not increase the chance of bruising and is preferred for the week prior to treatment. To help with possible discomfort, you may take Tylenol one hour prior to your scheduled appointment. Do not take more than 3000mg of Tylenol in a 24-hour period.

Post Treatment

  • Massage the treated areas 5 times a day, for 5 minutes, and for 5 days after treatment. If you are having your buttocks treated we encourage you to work out and/or walk as much as possible as the continued movement mimics the same benefits as the massage.
  • After your treatment soreness in the jaw and while chewing is expected. This may last for several days. If needed you may take Tylenol to help with possible discomfort. Do not take more than 3000mg of Tylenol in a 24 hour period.
  • To reduce the risk of bruising, consider taking over the counter Arnica tablets, if it is not contraindicated with your current medication regimen. Arnica is available online, at most supplement stores, as well as Whole Foods, Vitamin Shoppe, Amazon etc. Start taking oral Arnica after your treatment. Take as directed on the bottle for 3-5 days or as long as bruising is present.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours (except with treatment to buttocks.)
